Militarization of the law enforcement in the USA: historical and political aspects

Abstract

Recent discussions over the militarization of law enforcement and nationwide criticism of the American police have intensified with a string of incidents of excessive use of force against racial and ethnic minorities. This article examines the militarization of US law enforcement as a phenomenon that generates distrust among civilians, enhances the indiscriminate use of force, and strengthens state control over citizens. The article analyzes the historical evolution of the concept of militarization of law enforcement agencies. The political and historical significance and social consequences of the police militarization are discussed.
